A HIGHLY POPULAR INTRODUCTION TO BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY

Author Werner Keller wrote in the Introduction to the revised edition of this book. "My book... was first published in 1955... Since that time Biblical archaeology has brought to light hitherto undiscovered facts by the use of new techniques and up-to-date methods of investigation. It has been possible to confirm and reinforce a number of theories, while other accepted opinions, previously considered to be scientifically established, have had to be called into question and the conclusions even of well-known scholars revised..." (Pg. 19) He adds, "As a journalist I have been for many years exclusively concerned with the results of modern science and research... Thanks to the findings of the archaeologists many of the Biblical narratives can be better understood now than ever before." (Pg. 21, 23) He concludes, "In view of the overwhelming mass of authentic and well-attested evidence now available... there kept hammering on my brain this one sentence: `The Bible if right after all!'" (Pg. 24)
He acknowledges, "we must ask what Hittites these were with whom Abraham was negotiating. Where did they come from if Abraham, as is alleged, lived at such an early date that the Hittite Empire... was not even in existence?... One thing is certain. The problems raised by the references to the Hittites in the Bible have not been cleared up by the discovery of the Hittite Empire in Asia Minor. On the contrary, we now have two categories of Hittites, those in the Bible and the others whose presence in Asia Minor has been proved by archaeology. The statements about the two kinds do not coincide in all respects. The difficulties have not been removed, they are just beginning!" (Pg. 116)
He observes, "We must content ourselves here with the assurance that the hypercritical attitude which previously obtained in respect of the earlier historical traditions of Israel has no longer any justification. Even the long-disputed date of the Exodus can now be fixed within reasonable limits... If we put it at about 1290 B.C. we cannot go far wrong... The reign of Ramesses II is the time of the oppression and forced labour of Israel, but also the time at which Moses the great liberator of his people appears... The similarity [of King Sargon being found as a babe in the bulrushes] with the Biblical story of Moses is in fact astounding... The basket-story is a very old Semitic folk-tale... It is nothing more than the frills with which posterity has always loved to adorn the lives of great men. Who would dream of doubting the historicity of the Emperor Barbarossa, simply because he is said to be still sleeping under Kyffhauser?" (Pg. 122-123)
He says of the Babylonian Captivity, "Certainly the destruction was great and the human losses through war, deportations and executions were not small, yet there were still people, including priests, even in Jerusalem, who lamented the destruction of the Temple and went about earning their living... It can be deduced from certain statements in the Bible that there apparently still were comparatively well-to-do people who had managed to survive the catastrophe ... The end of the kingdom of Judah marked the end of the history of Ancient Israel; the history of the Jews now began." (Pg. 284-285)
Of the Census of Quirinius in Luke 2, he says, "There is no record of a general census throughout the empire in the years 7 and 6 B.C. Is it possible that St. Luke had made a mistake? For a long time it seemed as if he had. It was only when a fragment of a Roman inscription was discovered at Antioch that the surprising fact emerged that Quirinius has been in Syria once before on a mission from the Emperor Augustus in the days of Saturninus the pro-consul. At that time his assignment had been purely military... Quirinius established his seat of government as well as his headquarters in Syria between 10 and 7 B.C." (Pg. 323-324)
Although archaeological research has proceeded since this revised edition was published, the breadth and clarity of this book make it of lasting appeal to students of the Bible.
