“Sergeant… there is a brewery here!” shouted Private Lutje into the tent of his commanding officer. His regiment had just set up camp outside of Tucson. It was spring. The year was 1866. And the good private had reason to be shocked. How could anyone brew beer in the desert? The water was alkaline (when it was fit to drink at all), grains were scarce, bottles were in short supply, and refrigeration was nearly non-existent. But human ingenuity cannot be overestimated, especially when it comes to creating alcoholic beverages.
Since 1864, the state’s breweries have had a history as colorful as the state. With an eye like a historian, the good taste of a connoisseur, and the tenacity of a dedicated collector, author Ed Sipos serves up beer history with gusto. Brewing Arizona is the first book of Arizona beer. It includes every brewery known to have operated in the state, from the first to the latest, from crude brews to craft brews, from mass beer to microbrews. This eye-opening chronicle is encyclopedic in scope but smooth in its delivery. Like a fine beer, the contents are deep and rich, with a little froth on top.
With more than 250 photographs—200 in full color—Brewing Arizona is as beautiful as it is tasty. So put up your feet, grab a cold one, and sip to your heart’s delight.

“This book is for every beer drinker who fancies her/himself an informed imbiber and for every relative or friend of a beer drinker who will see this as the perfect Arizona gift.”—Richard Sims, director of the Montana Historical Society
“Beer has played an interesting and important role in the culture and history of Arizona, and we are fortunate to have recently witnessed the revival of craft brewing, as the industry has come full circle.”—Kevin Kious, co-author of St. Louis Brews: 200 Years of Brewing in St. Louis, 1809–2009
“Brewing Arizona is a thoroughly revealing and researched encyclopedia of Arizona's brew history. It's comforting to know that the Wild West celebrated with adequate amounts of local beer in centuries past and has continued celebration today. This belongs on your American history shelf.”—Charlie Papazian, author of The Complete Joy of Homebrewing
“With record growth and fevered enthusiasm for local craft beer, it would be easy to assume that we are living in an unprecedented moment in Arizona brewing history. Ed Sipos makes a compelling argument to look toward the past. 'Drink Local' campaigns have their roots in Territorial days. The challenges of competing with out-of-state breweries, the harsh environment and the boom-or-bust nature of this brutal and beautiful state have made their imprint on every era of brewing. We are all fortunate that this book is here to provide perspective in this vital time for brewers and beer enthusiasts.”—Rob Fullmer, President, Arizona Society of Homebrewers

Arizona's Storied Brewing Past, Brought to Life
By Bryan Carey
Beer is an industry with a storied past. It is an industry that is highly regulated and each state has its own unique set of laws governing its use, manufacture, distribution, etc. These differences, along with the often colorful individuals who have owned and operated breweries over the years, make the brewing industry one of the most unique of all. The mayhem that is the American brewing industry is captured nicely in the pages of Brewing Arizona, a walk through nearly 200 years of brewing history in the American southwest.
Brewing Arizona is a large, coffee table size book that covers the Arizona brewing scene from roughly the early 1800's to the present day. From the wild west days before Arizona achieved statehood to the modern craft beer boom, Brewing Arizona is ready to share the industry's high points, low points, and facts about the interesting individuals who helped shape the business as we know it today.
This book is well- researched and modern day craft beer fans will be happy to know that it devotes most of its pages to the craft beer boom of the past thirty or so years. Yes, the older history is covered as well, but the modern era receives the bulk of the book's pages. Readers will enjoy hearing about some of these newer players in the craft beer game, how they created their businesses, and the many unique challenges they face as they try to run a brewery from day to day.
Brewing Arizona is a walk through history and attempts to cover as many facts as its pages will allow. Because of this, it tends to present its material in a rather straight- forward manner without added humor, modifiers/descriptors, and other writing styles common to creative non- fiction. In many ways, it is like reading a long research paper that has been modified for general reading. It also has plenty of illustrations, too, and they are a tremendous asset to the book. Most of the pages include pictures and they are great for helping the reader associate a face with a name, a building with a brewery, etc.
America's brewing industry is one of its most unique and the people, places, and circumstances that helped make Arizona beer what it is today are covered nicely in the pages of Brewing Arizona. I came away from the reading with newfound knowledge of the Grand Canyon state's brewing industry and got to know quite a bit about its breweries, both old and new, and the many colorful individuals who have brewed its beer and helped its brewing industry adapt to change. It's a good way to learn a piece of brewery history and I recommend it to all.

I have been waiting for this book to be published since I first read about it in 2007! If you like beer and Arizona it is fabulous. It would still be a great book, even if you are not from Arizona.
