With Points + Lines: Diagrams and Projects for the City, influential architect and theorist Stan Allen proposes a series of new architectural strategies for the contemporary city. Organized in the form of a user's manual, it juxtaposes texts outlining Allen's theoretical principles with his projects, in which those principles are demonstrated in practice. Finding inspiration in the artistic minimalism and postminimalism of the 1970s, Allen uses the city's vitality and infrastructure to support projects that reflect and augment the urban experience. Included in this volume are three essays by Allen along with six projects, including his designs for the Cardiff Bay Opera House in Wales, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the Souks of Beirut, the Logistical Activities Zone of Barcelona, the Korean-American Museum of Art in Los Angeles, and the National Diet Library in Kansai Kan, Japan. Allen's work is introduced by K. Michael Hays; R.E. Somol provides an afterword. In addition, the book contains a complete, illustrated chronology of Allen's projects.

About the Author
Stan Allen worked for Richard Meier and Rafael Moneo before opening his own practice. He teaches at Columbia University and is projects editor of the journal Assemblage. His work has been published in Assemblage, A+U, Interiors, and Architectural

This book addresses a universal question in regards to understanding and, more importantly, presenting an abstract, yet more comprehensible reference between architecture and other contextual elements. Stan Allen proposes that they are all fractions of a common system, the most complex order of `the city' in this case. He has eloquently woven various aspects of these manifold connections through his writings, and validated them in extremely stimulating diagrams. The results are projects that are filters for seeing figures of architecture in exchange with the background of the city. Architecture is complicated; not by itself, but because it is a component in a complicated network. This condition in the city can be manipulated by (and through) architecture--in the form (and force) of a point, other times of a line, but most of the time both.

This book contains some of the more useful thoughts published on diagrams to date. Although many architects frequently refer to diagrams as a methodology, Stan Allen has made them one of the focal points of his work. This book and his lectures often excite controversy over the way in which architects use diagrams. Diagrams have a kind of potential energy which can be interpreted in a number of ways to generate a piece of architecture. The book Points + Lines introduces ideas with which every student should be familiar and which each architect should address. Stan Allen makes a refreshingly clear delivery of his ideas in a contemporary architecture culture of overcomplication, vacant formalism, and thoughtless commercial production. We can only hope that the author's relatively young age will privelege us with the production of more written work.

This was a great read. The action kept you on the edge

This was a great read. The action kept you on the edge. The mystery in realizing the lay of the land and the characters position in it all remained till almost the last scene. The romance was tight and well drawn. As this takes place in a less than welcoming society for mm relationships, I was happily surprised that in the end I enjoyed the book despite my usual desire the dream ending. Somehow Cally Sharp has a way of having a gritty and taut reality exist in close presence of romance and love. That is not an easy feat. I admire it. If I was to speak in any way negative in my experience it would be that I hoped to get to know a few more of her fascinating characters.

My only complaint on this book is it was too rushed . There was such a great plot the book could easily have been doubled in size. I very much hope the author will do a sequel.

About the Author
David A. Lauer is Emeritus Professor of Art at the College of Alameda.

Stephen Pentak received his BA from Union College in New York, and his MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He is Professor Emeritus of Art, and a past Associate Dean of the College of the Arts at Ohio State University. He has been the recipient of four Ohio Arts Council Fellowships and he has been a visiting resident artist at Delfina Studios in London, and Glasgow School of Art. Mr. Pentak's recent solo exhibitions include shows at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York and Susan Street in San Diego. Required Reading for any Serious Art Student

Basic Design is a must for any art student who is serious about his/her talent. This book was offered as a suggested reading source in my Color Theory class and I have cherished it for years since. Design Basics is very thorough in it's explaination of every kind of art form. You would be greatly benefited to purchase this book!

Be careful...

The gave it four-stars based on a quick look -- I'd read extensively in the fourth edition, and this one looks better. HOwever, this book (7th ed) has a substantial on-line component. To access the on-line part, you have to go to a website and then enter the access number that's bound into the book. My book didn't have the card -- but I could see where somebody had pulled it out. For this very expensive book, you really need to get the on-line part -- but the website itself is absolutely opaque. If you have the number, you get in; if not, you don't, and there's no way even to register a complaint. I would think this would be a special problem with any used books (though I'm not sure -- they could be fine.) I note that somebody else has registered the same complaint. So, mine goes back tomorrow. I don't know whether I'll get a new one, or just stick with my really beat-up fourth ed.

My five-year old grandson loved it!

Jake Perez has a future writing children's books if this is any indication of his talent. "Sweet Coco" is the story of a young girl's adventure as she, and we, learn about everyone's favorite flavor, chocolate. Coco's journey takes her from the coco bean trees of foreign lands all the way to the neighborhood pastry shop. The book is well-illustrated and the writing is perfect for a young child, especially one learning to read.

I found this book to be excellent and it has replaced my college physics book as my favorite engineering reference. This book covers many engineering topics with enough detail to aid in solving significant engineering problems.

She is in one sense a good ally of expressivism, for she reserves especial scorn for various varieties of naturalism that purport to defend or explain objective authority. As she was well aware, her insistence on its mysterious nature is calculated to discompose some of its more complacent friends. Nevertheless, the best chapters here show a crispness and a focus that demand attention from everyone interested in the phenomena of human reason." Ethics

Continuing the morality debate

For readers aquainted with philosophical jargon, this book makes sense; for the common reader, her dense prose requires at least a dictionary. Jean Hampton deconstructs naturalistic philosophy (the idea that moral claims should be explained using scientific method and logic) and asserts a moral objectivist position (that moral claims are objective in nature and external to the individual). Her ideas are interesting and provacative, especially because of the naturalistic trend prevalent in society right now. Most people would agree with Hampton's adversaries--that there are not external norms that dictate our morality--as moral claims are usually seen as a product of our relative upbringing or society. However, she persuasively writes against this common notion, though it is hard to grasp her entire point at times. I enjoyed the book, though it could have gone through a couple more revisions if she hadn't died before she was able to. Her early death is a deprivation, especially as a loss to the discussion of modern moral philosophy.

This series provides succinct and balanced overviews of the religions of the world. Chinese Religious Traditions provides a concise introduction to the history of religion in China and its ramifications in China today. Focusing on the four major religious traditions of Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, and popular religion, this book covers the religious and ethical ideas as well as the practices within each tradition. The book traces themes that are common to Chinese society from earliest times to the present day. It also highlights the ways in which each tradition has responded to and influenced political and cultural change.

China has been the major cultural center of East Asia for about 2000 years, and our knowledge of its religious traditions extends back at least another 1500 years before that. Over that span of 3500 years, China has produced two major systems of religious thought and practice (Confucianism and Daoism) and has thoroughly transformed a third (Buddhism), while its popular, unsystematized religious practices have simultaneously developed as a fourth, semi-independent tradition. All four of these religious traditions have not only shaped Chinese culture but have also influenced the neighboring cultures of Korea, Japan, and parts of Southeast Asia. Today they are becoming much better-known in the `'Vest, through scholarship and through the presence of Chinese communities outside of Asia.

In our increasingly interconnected world, in which political and geographic boundaries are becoming less and less significant and scholarship is continually advancing, new perspectives in cross-cultural studies are constantly being generated. The late Ninian Smart, under whom I was very fortunate to study at the University of California at Santa Barbara, was keenly aware that religions are products of particular cultures, and that the continuing life of those cultures prevents us from closing the books on their religious traditions. Hence the need periodically to reexamine the religions of the world.

Tracing the development of four religious traditions over 3500 years in a book as short as this has not been an easy task. I am grateful to the staff at Laurence King Publishing in London, especially Richard Mason and Christine Davis, for helping me to meet the requirements of this series. I would also like to acknowledge the stimulation and insights I have gained from my students at Kenyon College, where I have taught the course on which this book is based for fifteen years. That course was powerfully influenced by my graduate studies with Robert Gimello and Tu Weiming, who may recognize some of their insights in these pages. Finally, I owe a great deal to Ninian Smart, whose clarity of thinking, sensitivity of interpretation, and boundless goodwill and good cheer were models I will always treasure. Not the most riveting read, but extremely informational

All things considered, this book is hard to beat if you want to learn about religious traditions in China. It is a little dry, but it does a spectacular job of examining the and interpreting the culture. I highly recommend it for any kind of religions of China class as a basic text to use as a base.
