About the Author

Annette Wannamaker is an associate professor at Eastern Michigan University. She is North American Editor of Children’s Literature in Education, author of Boys in Children’s Literature and Popular Culture: Masculinity, Abjection, and the Fictional Child (2008), and editor of Mediated Boyhoods: Boys, Teens and Young Men in Popular Culture and Media (2010).

Michelle Ann Abate is an associate professor of English at Hollins University. Michelle is the author of the books Raising Your Kids Right: Children’s Literature and American Political Conservatism (2010) and Tomboys: A Literary and Cultural History (2008). Also, with Kenneth B. Kidd, she co-edited the collection Over the Rainbow: Queer Children’s and Young Adult Literature (2011).

About the Author
Pat Cunningham is a professor of education at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Pat has taught first grade, fourth grade, and remedial reading and has over 30 years of teaching experience. She is involved in staff development with teachers and administrators across the United States. Pat was inducted into the International Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame in 2002.

Dottie Hall is a former curriculum coordinator who has taught first, second, third, and fourth grades, and at the college level. Dottie is the director of the Four-Blocks® Center at Wake Forest University. She has over 30 years of teaching experience and is involved in staff development with teachers and administrators across the United States.

If you are wondering whether or not to buy this book... buy it!! It has been SO useful to me. It is so easy to give it to a parent volunteer to do with a small group of kids for a (WORTHWHILE!) center. I always wanted to do more Making Words activities with my students, but it was always such a pain to get out the right letters for 24 students and then put them away when done. This makes it super easy because the letters are already on the page, the students just cut them out themselves. And it really is a complete making words activity because after you make the words, you sort them, and then transfer them to help you spell a word in a sentence. The words are just perfect for my average 1st grader, and I got the 2nd grade book for my advanced students. (Great way to differentiate). The students love seeing if they can figure out the secret word. As you can see, I can't say enough good things about this book.

Great for home!

My girls love this. It was "game time" when we played in the summer. It's fun because you get to cut out letters, play with them, and discover new words. It is a very quick, simple way to review phonics, vocabulary, spelling- all without them really knowing they are doing all that! We would save the letters and when daddy got home we would challenge him to figure out the "mystery word". It's also a great introduction to Scrabble. One daughter used the 3rd grade while the other used the 1st grade. We did it at the same time just taking turns with each new discovered word. I used this program when I taught school and I highly recommend it for school or home.

Summer Homework Is Fun for a Future First Grader

This is a wonderful book for my ESL tutee. Although he will be begin first grade this late summer, his mother told me he is reading at the third grade level. This book will assist with the "homework" I assign each summer to keep up on his studies.

Being a "special needs" child due to a birth delivery injury, the child has limited motion in his right hand and shoulder and writes with his left hand. He will be practicing his printing while still undergoing home exercises directed by his physical therapist and conducted by his mother to strengthen his right hand and arm. Full mobility is not expected.

This book will assist the gregarious and eager student to excel and exceed expectations in school. His kindergarten teacher recognized that he already knew how to read and focused on her favorite books which were Pete the Cat books. I had ordered many Pete the Cat books for the tutee in anticipation of kindergarten. The tutee loved the books ordered through Amazon and almost literally "ate" the books up.

The tutee, I believe, is in love with reading and learning. I have told the tutee that I expect him to study and his parents support that by encouraging library trips and school participation. This book will certainly make summer homework fun.

Big, Bulky and Full of Info, But a Very Hard Read.

I recently used this Text to teach 3 MBA-level marketing courses. The text was selected by the department, but I would not recommend it. While it is fairly comprehensive, it lacks a good real-world feel and students found it tedious. There were a number of very good cases and examples, but somehow they did not connect well with the stodgy writing of the text. It feels like it could have been 1/2 the size and better written. That said, there are a limited number of texts available for this level of coursework. The next time I teach this class, I will look for a better text. You better really really enjoy reading and international marketing if you buy this book for non-academic uses. If you are a professor, be sure to get an advance copy before you select it. That said, you may be able to make this text work, if you have some strong backing materials. However, if you are a student, have a Red Bull handy--this one is a hard read.

a good coverage, but...

I used his book as an MBA student 15 or so years ago. Now as an adjunct professor, I am using this newest edition in my undergraduate classes. Although my observation may be biased, the book is a bit too encyclopedic, a bit superficial in coverage, and fails to excite the students. I wish it were more up-to-date.
