This richly evocative study by a Jungian analyst posits the existence of a madwoman archetype. The image appears frequently in women's dreams, according to Leonard ( The Wounded Women: Healing the Father and Daughter Relationship ). And she makes a good case that the madwoman is a messenger, metaphor and model who points the way to women's liberation. The author encourages women to acknowledge their own madwoman in order to transform themselves. She intriguingly redefines many female stereotypes--The Dark Muse, The Recluse, The Bag Lady, The Visionary, The Caged Bird--in relation to her archetype. What is especially interesting here are the examples from famous women, literature, films and Leonard's own patients. The most remarkable include Camille Claudel, Alma Mahler, Maria Callas, Rosa Luxemburg and Rachel Carson--as well as the imaginary Medea, Mrs. Bridges, Blue Angel and Thelma and Louise. Leonard also shows how some of the real women she writes about were influenced by the fictional or mythical women. In this work, she provides a new perspective on how women can break out of culturally imposed roles.

Feminine madness entraps women in traditional, patriarchal roles, keeping creativity captive to repressed anger and fear. Jungian analyst Leonard ( On the Way to the Wedding , LJ 6/15/86; Witness to the Fire , Shambhala, 1989) employs her talent as storyteller to treat us to yet another book on psychological archetypes. Mad energy is wasted on archetypes such as the saint, the ice queen, the dragon lady, the sick mother, the caged bird, the muse, the rejected lover, the bag lady, the recluse, and the revolutionary. She explains the archetypes of contemporary women as well as those of representative women in history (Camille Claudel as the muse); in films and novels ( Thelma and Louise as revolutionaries, Mr. and Mrs. Bridge as caged bird); and in mythology and fairy tales. Leonard uses more examples than theorizing to make complex Jungian concepts understandable, accounting for her readability and popularity. Her latest book will certainly prove to be as successful as the others.

Walking with Madness....

The highest compliment I can pay Dr. Leonard is that this brilliant book catalyzed transformation in my life, and those whom I shared her premise with. I was spurred on, upon reading this book to create a dynamic workshop, which has led to a philanthropic theater project to be brought to girls coming of age in residential group care.

The basic message Leonard imparts is that in the journey of spiritual and Self-realization the stage of `madness' precedes surrender and acceptance. Spiritual madness/ Breakdown is a potential path to truth, as it is a descent into darkness where all illusions are stripped away and an old consciousness and old belief system can be released. Essentially this state of madness involves a prolonged descent into the unknown. Intense suffering, disillusionment, and loneliness generally characterize this experience. During this intense prolonged crisis, one may feel abandoned, terrified and out of control. Initially the challenge is to turn within, and away from seeking direction from others, yet concomitantly remaining attuned to synchronicity and the principle of faith. Ultimately we are challenged to find communion from a new place of integration and perspective, in which paradox is embraced.

The plight of the the woman struggling to actualize parts of the self that have been rejected, involves a descent into madness. Leonard emphasizes that it is essential to differentiate between the divine madness that involves an inner descent/journey that can lead to integration, from that which can be referred to as destructive craziness. The inner Madwoman erupts, in an effort to confront inner and outer oppression, and subjugation. When the oppressive forces of order and control are challenged, the Madwoman emerges as an impulse towards freedom. The repression of life-giving creative energy can result in a destructive madness, when the victimization is prolonged. The courage and determination to live in one's truth, requires the strength of a Madwoman. The creative aspect of madness, can potentially manifest as extreme creative outbursts, activism, visions, etc. However, when one's suffering is denied and avoided, the Madwoman can take over in a destructive way. It is then that her energy can be experienced as negative resigned stagnation, which stultifies creative life.

Leonard introduces us to the many `faces' of the Madwoman. She helps us to to identify the madwoman within, by asking us what we are trying to break free from. What is the form of our rebellion? What are the internal and external oppressors in our life subjugating? She encourages us to examine what confines our spirit. How is energy trapped? Is there a symbiotic cord with a mad mother that needs to be cut? Do you need to reclaim you voice and vocalize rage? Are you an outcast, a visionary, an addict, a shrew/hysteric, a bitch, a feral child, a warrior, a whore, and a destroyer of self or others, a victim, a recluse/loner?
We see in mythology the `Madwoman' is often depicted as a creator and destroyer. In fairy tales she is often depicted as a witch, catalyzing in the maiden great power when she faces the darkness within. We all live out our own personal myths and can relate to these archetypes on personal and transpersonal levels. It is by elevating our own stories to archetypal and mythical levels that we infuse the profane with the sacred. In so doing, we open up to transformative possibilities.

What we ultimately discover through this dark journey is the gift is of paradox. The `destroyer' is the `creator'. The mythic and the mundane are interconnected. Polarities join. The Ego meets God and fantasy is removed. For those who endure and integrate the wisdom found within the descent into madness, it is also recognized that the Madwoman within is the Holy Spirit.

Mad Love.

I loved this book for a lot of reasons and I could re-read and re-read it. I'm feeling it. Many people - and especially women - are in the torturous position of having real love in their hearts, wanting that perfection, and being in the world where you have to adapt to systems that are the opposite of love. We bury it, we deny it, we try to be oblivious, but it's always there underneath lurking away. For some of us, it bleeds right out onto the surface. Truly sane women must go mad sometimes, because you can't despise systems of cruelty and make it in this world. Nature opposes us, the world often opposes us, as do the powerful, our own nature and whoever created all this. The closer you look at truth the more real pain gets the more "mad" you get. Sometimes only oblivion or cold detachment makes you "happy" and "normal." Crazy people have tapped into reality - which is why they're crazy in the first place.

I like the different archetypes in here - The Recluse, The Visionary, The Bag Lady, The Muse, The Revolutionary, also - Ice Queen, Rejected Lover, Caged Bird, Dragon Lady. I relate to all of those on different levels, especially Recluse, Visionary, Revolutionary.

I think they should've added the Angry Amazon, The Hunchback ( a male madwoman, but I definitely relate) and also the Adapter, strangely enough. I know a lot of women who are "adapters" and they have much inner madness bubbling around in their guts. Their smiles are cracking, their anger and torment just under the surface, they join patriarchal institutions, they tow the line, they talk about "soft" power in their attempt to manipulate the people that rule and/or abuse them, but they're very, very angry, I'm not so sure she's that oblivious either. I relate to her too, she's trying to gentle the world down, by joining it and manipulating it from within. Beauty and the Beast. It doesn't work that well either, she'd be better of a Dragon Lady and Revolutionary which actually does work a little better and you don't have to suck as much d*ck. If you know how to control that power and not make the mistake of using it against the small, you can protect your castle (what you love) with wisely used fierce power. If you don't let Bag Lady or Hunchback get you, that is. Too late for some unfortunately - but someone out there take heed. Men can also be madwomen if they feel that inner torment and have a fierce desire to protect the small and helpless.

Having said that, I hope my inner Goddess rules over my inner madwoman most of the time. I'd rather that than my inner crazy because the same things that inspired madwoman behavior can easily slip into the same behaviors that inspired it - cruelty, tyranny etc.... Being so depressed you can't function doesn't help what you love, being so mad you can't deal with the world doesn't ultimately help your cause. The most positive madwomen are visionary and revolutionary.

I've been reading Walter Jon Williams since he wrote Hardwired and Voice Of The Whirlwind. But I have not found his recent work as good as the books he wrote all those years ago. For example, I thought that Implied Spaces was a weak book. I was pleasantly surprised by This Is Not A Game, which I found to be Williams' best book in some time.

The book is written in a three act form. The first part of the book is fascinating and sets the context for the moral issues that arise later in the book. Reading this book it seemed to me that Williams was "doing" an impression of William Gibson, picking up on some of the themes that Gibson has touched on. I enjoyed this, especially because Gibson hasn't been doing Gibson much these days (sadly his Spook Country was one of his weakest books). Nor do I see anything wrong with one artist being influenced by another.

This Is Not A Game is set in the relatively near future. One of the things I enjoyed about this book is its technological speculation. I am a computer scientist and I found most of the speculation reasonable. There was some suspension of disbelief required when it comes to the ability of software to "learn", but I didn't find that this detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

One way I judge a book is whether I'm still thinking about it after I've finished reading it. I keep thinking of bits and pieces of This Is Not A Game.

High Tech Plot Steals the Show

"This is Not A Game" is a 2008 novel by science fiction writer Walter Jon Williams. It is not hard science fiction, but can rather be classified as a high-tech thriller.

It is rather tricky to describe the plot of "This is Not a Game" (TINAG). The plot revolves around the main character, Dagmar Shaw, who is a writer, or 'puppetmaster," for a type of game that is organized online, but involves elements that must be completed in the real world. The "game" can be thought of as an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) that requires players to get out into the world rather than playing the game 100 percent behind a computer screen. When one of Shaw's colleagues is mysteriously murdered, she solicits help from the players of her online games to help solve the mystery (and without telling them that the scenario is real). However, as the body count rises, Shaw finds herself neck-deep in a nefarious and high-tech plot that could have ramifications for the entire world.

Unfortunately, the main plot is very slow to get off the ground. The first third of the book almost seems like a different story entirely, though Williams connects it to the rest of the plot later on, and in a creative way. Even when the ball does get rolling, the plot doesn't move at the breakneck pace that one would expect of a modern thriller, and the chapters seem overly lengthy. However, the technology end of the plot is fascinating and it is difficult to discern where the real world ends and the fictions begins. The convincing use of technology is reminiscent of a Michael Crichton novel, a testament to Mr. Williams's strong grasp of where the future might take us.

The main characters are almost entirely Millennials. Readers in their 20s and 30s will understand the characters, but older readers might be turned off (and might find the gaming angle to be foreign to them). The characters are interesting and are realistically realized, but a lack of other types of characters makes the novel less interesting and less accessible.

TINAG is well-written and does a good job of straddling the line between sci-fi vs thriller. The dialogue seems real and believable, as does the obvious pain-staking research. However, there does seem to be a change of tone from part 1 of the novel to the rest of the novel, almost as if part 1 was originally conceived as a separate novel or story, and later combined with the rest of the novel.

Overall, TINAG is novel worth exploring, particularly if you enjoy a thriller with a high-tech plot.

Brisk and readable, but a little obvious

I like Williams' work, and both "Aristoi" and "Metropolitan" are favorites. "Game" is a couple of steps below those. The first (and best) segment, in which a Dagmar, game producer is forced to rely upon strangers on the Internet for help escaping a collapsed state, is tense and tightly-plotted. The second, longer segment, which tells the story of Dagmar's game and a few real-life murders that may or may not be attached to the game's events, works less well.

Part of the problem may be that Williams simply doesn't have anywhere to go: he introduces only four characters of any consequence, and one of them is the narrator, so any mysteries will be solved after the second murder. That limited scope is a feature of the work in general: although we're told about 3 million people playing the game, there can't be more than six or seven people named in the book. Williams keeps only a very narrow window open on the action. Because of this, the book flies by, but there aren't any surprises for the alert reader.

A couple of moments in the novel that don't amount to much--the inept Israeli security company, the kung-fu Muslims who save Dagmar--gave me the impression that this book might have been trimmed down from something longer. If that's the case, it's too bad; a little more flesh on the bones of this story might have made the second half of the novel feel less inexorable.

During his three-decade career as a head coach in the NBA, George Karl has amassed more victories (1,175) than all but four men in league history, including Phil Jackson, generally considered the greatest coach in the game. While Jackson may have earned his iconic status by morphing into the Zen master, Karl has succeeded in the opposite manner—as an excitable firebrand who has never backed down from a confrontation, on the court or off.

As a player—first for the University of North Carolina and later for the San Antonio Spurs—Karl was known for his full-throttle commitment, which often left his legs tattooed with floor burns and his jersey flecked with blood. As a coach, Karl used his combative personality to stand up to diva superstars, such as Allen Iverson, Gary Payton, Carmelo Anthony, and DeMarcus Cousins, among others, who were not used to the style of coaching that demanded they follow the same rules as the rest of the team.

Great Sports book

Great Sports book! Hard working George! Best basketball of any Denver Nuggets teams once the traded Carmelo Anthony. I followed this team from the ABA days with Spencer Haywood making a big year. Alex Engish, Fat Lever and Calvin Nate being great but the team that that George had after the Carmelo trade was easily the most fun to watch! The team had fun playing the up tempo and dribble and drive. Nuggets were worth watching before they let him go!!!

Dude talks trash but has a fat resume

He doesn't waste too much time talking about his wife and kids and family. He talks about nothing but basketball. However, He definitely is a grumpy old man and a hater in general. Not a fan of the guy, but he will go down as one of the 10 best NBA coaches ever.

Lost in political correctness

I wonder what audience the author is targeting. The first book was good. This one, not so much, and yes, like someone said in a previous review, it is mostly due to dialog. This is a story about a former force recon space marine who cross trained into being a wizard scout. The MC could care less if a couple of kids burn to death in a building when they aren't on mission, but heaven forbid he uses colorful language. Instead we are treated to drivel such as, and I quote "Wisebutt". This is supposed to be coming out of the mouth of a soldier who has killed people without remorse. Even worse, the MC appears to have become mentally handicapped since the first book. He can't think at all for the first half of the book, has to have every single detail of what's going on explained to him, and then whines about how hard it is to understand. I feel cheated. Please release the author from whatever politically correct holding facility he's being kept in and let him write for people over ten years old.

Same author different story

I was very disappointed in this book. The first book in the series was great it had dialog, action, plot twists and a sensible plot that you could follow. This book on the other hand was for the most part Rick talking to his battle computer nick. The dialog was dry and often times very repetitive. Also the dialog with the kids was just horrible I understand the concept of children with adult minds but seriously they were either using child language or adult there was no mix. Lastly everything you were familiar with in the first book and the whole reason you went to read the next book was tossed out the window. I was like reading a book by a completely new author.

When did the main character become a douche? It's hard to like a book when you dislike the protagonist. It didn't seem that way in the first one. He was very respectful and polite to the elf, he was friendly and supportive of his friends in the academy. He was willing to sacrifice himself for his AI. I don't know why the change but I didn't like it

Sad but true

The subject matter is difficult to read; however this information is needed in order to have a context to understand the diabolical disorientation that both the Church and the world are experiencing. The first part of the book, regarding Catholic prophecy, is the most difficult part of the book; yet it is also the most comforting part. This is because all is in God's hands. As difficult as these times are, it is comforting to know that the Lord told His prophets centuries ago, what our current times would be like. Most of the political-economic parts of the book I already knew, nevertheless it is handy to have all of it in book form.
