Live To Read
By Chels
Readers who were waiting at the edge of their seats can finally relax. Kelsey, Ren, and Kishan return in yet another adventure filled with romance, mystery, action, and intrigue. The story is easy to fall in to; Colleen Houck provides vivid descriptions, the places will be fresh and real in the reader's mind throughout the story. The setting of the book truly sets the scene in this case.

The characters were much the same from the first couple of books with some development. Ren and Kishan are as charismatic and swoon-worthy as ever, but Kelsey began to get annoying. She still hasn't fully chosen between Ren and Kishan although she considers herself to be Kishan's girlfriend. She simply doesn't devote herself to him in any serious way; poor Kishan seems so sure about her, so confident that he loves her and she doesn't give much back. There were a couple surprises in this book, some concerning Mr. Kadam and Kishan, that will make the reader have a "gut reaction." Colleen Houck's ability to affect the reader is such a way is the mark of an excellent writer.

There is a certain magic feel to the story, an undercurrent of suspense interwoven with romance that makes this book very memorable. The ending is, although likely not satisfying for all readers, a good ending. Colleen Houck ties up the last few remnants very well, starting in the beginning of the book to make it less shocking in the very end. Overall, this book is highly recommended to young adult/teen readers.

*Complimentary copy received for review, this in no way affects my opinion*

Destiny Delivers !
By Amanda G
This 4th installment in Colleen's thrilling indian series is everything thing i hoped it would be and everything i didn't even think to hope for.

It starts off with Kelsey's kidnapping and her imprisonment with the power hunger Lokesh as he prepares to take her as his bride and future mother to his vile offspring. I wont give to much away but lets say the engagement is short lived as two very dashing princes come to save her.
Mind you this is just the first few chapters. It gets WAY more interesting as the plight to break the damon curse finally comes to its last task with the rope of fire and kelsey must make her own choice as to which prince is her true destiny. Phenixes, Vampires, death caves, twin brothers, and a very twisted turn of fate leads the gang to a place where a final battle must be won or lost. We make new friends, lose loved ones, and find love in all the places we wished are characters to find it.

Spoiler!!!!!
Ren & Kishan are on equal ground this time around and there battle for kelsey is just as fierce as there greatest battle ahead of them.
Kishan is probably my favorite character as i love his easy going nature that hides a smoldering deep hearted person just under the surface.
Saying that i do think that Ren is the right choice for kelsey and that if kelsey wasn't so traumatized by her own fears of losing the people she loves she would have stopped latching on to kishan as a safety net and realized her heart belonged with Ren the entire time. I felt sorry for kishan because he loved her the way she loved Ren and i wanted kishan to have a women that could love him just as fiercely as he could love in return.

All i need to know now is " What the heck is Tigers Dream going to be about?" she wrapped up so much that i wonder if it is in anothers persons perspective all togther and no longer kelseys. If That is the case my money is on Nilima or Kishan, perhaps even the golden eyed baby?

Disastrous, series-ruining love triangle continues..
By Ashley Evans
When reading this review, keep in mind that I LOVED the first book--Tiger's Curse--but everything since then has gone downhill from me. The love triangle caused me to give the second and third books lower ratings, and now also the fourth book. If you loved all the books in the series until this point, you'll probably love Tiger's Destiny. If the love triangle has aggravated you, then my review is probably for you.

The love triangle is definitely what ruined this series. Throughout Tiger's Destiny, we have character after character reminding Kelsey to follow her heart, and telling her to pick between "her two tigers." Kelsey knows she has to make a decision. She knows that she loves Ren more. But she still spends THE ENTIRE BOOK just sitting there fretting about it and doing nothing (until the very end). For me this was most frustrating because Kelsey makes it very clear (in both Tiger's Voyage and in Tiger's Destiny) that she loves Ren more. Ren is the burning desire, the passion that cannot be calmed. She loves Kishan, but not in the "soul mate" type way. Kishan is the nice guy who's sweet, and safe, but without any spark. So regardless of which guy *YOU* like better, it's obvious that she should pick Ren because she loves him more and she's passionate about him. But instead, Kelsey comes up with a million excuses why she can't be with him, and instead, she decides to lead on Kishan. It is so unfair to be with a guy when you don't really want to be with him, and some of her actions in Tiger's Destiny just drove me insane (but they're spoilers so I won't list them).

Tiger's Destiny also had some issues that I found in earlier books. A lot of Kelsey's dialogue felt very, very scripted and emotionless. Kelsey wasn't impulsive and didn't have normal human reactions. Humans are impulsive. Even if it means freaking out and then recomposing ourselves a few minutes later. But not Kelsey. As an example: at one point Kelsey is off on her own, and then returns back to where she left Kishan and Ren to find that their tent has been ripped apart and Ren and Kishan are gone. They've been captured. Kelsey looks around and then says to Fanindra: "Well, we've got to save them. There's no question about that." There's no freaking out. There's no OH MY GOD WHERE HAVE MY TIGERS GONE?? I'M NOW ALL ALONE IN A JUNGLE FILLED WITH VAMPIRES AND ZOMBIES!! (which was true) If I was traveling with two people in a jungle filled with vampires and zombies, and then realized I was all alone, I would freak the **** out.

Honestly, the only reason I'm giving this book three stars instead of two, is because I can appreciate the research that went into this book and the creativity surrounding the fantasy and world building. The fantasy in this book didn't draw me in as much as it did in Tiger's Voyage, which was disappointing. Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to appreciate it? I don't know. But I can still acknowledge that there's some insane creativity going on here and Colleen Houck really brings fantasy and mythology to life.

The ending of Tiger's Destiny was totally and completely and 100% predictable, but I still enjoyed it. It's fun to see things get all wrapped up and have a little happily ever after. There were some seriously major Twilight references, but I did my best to ignore them. But one down side is that it felt really rushed. When Kelsey finally made her choice between the two guys, I wanted to rejoice and savour the moment.. but it all ended very, very quickly. I don't know what Colleen Houck has in store for us with the mysterious fifth book, but I seriously hope it expands upon the post-curse days.

A good companion to The Art and Science of Technical Analysis.
By Peter Host
This book is very different from other trading related books I read sofar. I'm familiar with Adam Grimes' work, and as a matter of fact his view of market structure makes perfect sense to me. The strength of Adam's two books is multifold. Two aspects amongst many :

* he defines clearly what an edge is, and how to check you have one. This is a topic of paramount importance, and hence shunned by almost any trading books which fall in the technical analysis category, and quite a few which pretend to teach systematic methods.
* however, Adam has a firm grasp of the fact that the human brains (and body) are remarkable inference machines, and therefore a well tended for intuition, is the best companion of a statistical edge.

I personally have read a good 300 books on trading, ranging from the good (schwager, Taleb on options, Ralph Vince, Clenow,...) to the useless (at least 90% of the rest, and yes, this includes a lot of "big" names), and Adam's two books are part of the few I am willing to dedicate multiple reading sessions and taking notes about, by hand, the oldfashioned way.

Very simple stats based. But lacks something, perhaps detail. Whilst the author indicates that the book will just cover some basics, you complete your reading of it thinking that you could have spent the time better elsewhere. Not recommended

From Library Journal
It's rare to find a series of basic instructional books that are well executed, comprehensive, and attractively priced. Each of the volumes in Hamlyn's "Step-by-Step Art School" series explores the evolution of a genre, its tools, and its methods. The series avoids the usual pitfall of so many beginners' books pretty pictures accompanied by brief, mediocre text. Instead, its carefully graded exercises are thoughtfully illustrated and packed with cogent advice for the novice. Buchan and Baker's book on still life, for example, contains a wonderful historical survey with examples ranging from Caravaggio, Manet, and van Gogh to Picasso and Warhol. Demonstrations utilize ink, pencil, watercolor, acrylics, and oils in various styles. One can experiment with realistic, abstract, and surreal treatments of a basket of fruit, an old telephone, or a collection of bottles. The quality of this series is consistent, and Hamlyn is, wisely, also reprinting earlier fine entries like Patricia Monahan's Step-by-Step Art School: Watercolour. Purchase as many of these as your budget allows.

Excellent for beginners.
By Cheryl A.
It's almost impossible to pick an art book based on others opinions but I personally fell in love with this book. I'm new to figure drawing and this book is just what I need. Not only does it give step-by-step instructions for several classic poses in a variety of mediums but it also provides you with the reference photo (which few figure drawing how-to's seem to do). There aren't a lot of exercises but for the price I'm still happy. A far more comprehensive book you should definitely check out is "The Big Book Of Drawing And Painting The Figure" - it's awesome and a great bargain at amazon!

A good book that covers a lot of material
By Alaskaguy
This is an excellent beginners book on the subject of depicting nudes in several different media. There are many excellent and highly detailed books available about figure drawing, but relatively few for acrylic, oil, or water color. This one covers many media - pencils, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, oil, acrylic and more. The examples are well illustrated, attractive, clearly explained, and simple enough for beginners to follow. The book is colorful and the subjects both varied and attractive. With as many media as are covered in this book, the authors could not go into the depth of a book focused on a single medium. Instead, they contented themselves with providing thorough explanations of the approaches that seem to work best for them. I was pleased to see some good simple recipes for mixing a suitable range of flesh tones (some authors are rather vague about specific color mixes). There are also good explanations of undercoating, modeling through tone and color, glazing techniques, etc. Basic techniques are explained and illustrated well, and the simple demos are executed well enough to inspire an inspiring artist to learn more and to do even better. For those with interest in continuing on with figure art, there are many more detailed books available. Some of the best are by Robert Barrett Life Drawing: How To Portray The Figure With Accuracy And Expression, Anthony Ryder The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing: A Contemporary Perspective on the Classical Tradition, Giovanni Civardi Drawing The Female Nude, Joseph SheppardHow to Paint Like the Old Masters, Laurel Hart Putting People in Your Paintings, Don AndrewsInterpreting the Figure in Watercolor, Boris Vallejo and Julie BellFantasy Workshop: A Practical Guide Fantasy Art Techniques. I have no hesitation recommending this book, because it covers a lot of ground, easily and clearly. I wish I'd found it sooner, but I've picked up a few new ideas too.

Mick Foley is a nice man, a family man who loves amusement parks and eating ice cream in bed. So how to explain those Japanese death matches in rings with explosives, golden thumbtacks and barbed wire instead of rope? The second-degree burn tissue? And the missing ear that was ripped off during a bout-in which he kept fighting? Here is an intimate glimpse into Mick Foley's mind, his history, his work and what some might call his pathology. Now with a bonus chapter summarizing the past 15 months-from his experience as a bestselling author through his parting thoughts before his final match. A tale of blood, sweat, tears and more blood-all in his own words-straight from the twisted genius behind Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mankind.

Amazon.com Review
Frankly, this literary critic didn't expect Mick Foley's memoir of his life as Mankind (and his other wrestling personas, Cactus Jack and Dude Love) to hit No. 1 on Amazon.com's hardcover nonfiction bestseller list in its first literary bout. The cover is cluttered and confusing, and do we really need 500-plus pages of Foley's boasts? Yes. Foley gives his all for his calling, and he burns to tell his adventures. Take the famous tale of how he lost most of his ear (the bloody result is depicted in the 16-page color-photo section). It was in his 1994 bouts with Vader (Leon White): after getting a broken nose, a dislocated jaw, and 21 stitches in the first match, Foley did his "hangman" routine, wherein he catches his neck between the second and third ropes and spins them into a twist. "The end result is the illusion of a man being hanged by his neck while his body kicks and writhes in an attempt to get out... the man actually is hanging by his neck and the body really does kick and writhe in an attempt to get out." Unfortunately, in the prior match, Too Cold Scorpio had had the officials tighten the ropes, so Foley tore off his ear to avoid death by strangulation, like "a fox that chews off its paw to escape a trap." Foley also wrestles on 10,000-thumbtack mats with barbwire ropes and C-4 explosives, and earns the ultimate compliment: "The fans really like the way you bleed." Many fans also like the way his gory story reads. --Tim Appelo

From the Inside Flap
This book is not for the squeamish. No. This is the autobiography of the Hardcore Legend, Mick Foley. Some wrestling fans claim that "Foley is God." You're about to find out why.

Mick Foley is a nice man. A family man. He loves his son, Dewey, his daughter, Noelle, and his beautiful wife, Colette. He loves amusement parks, eating ice cream in bed, and watching Nickelodeon.

So, how to explain his participation in Japanese Death Matches, which replace the ring ropes with barbed wire, cover the mats with glittering gold thumbtacks, and feature C4 explosives scattered throughout the ring? How to explain the barbed-wire scars that zigzag across his body, the second-degree burn tissue that is a memento of an exploding C4, and the missing ear that was ripped clean off his head during a bout? And how to explain how, after losing his ear, he then continued his match?

Here is an intimate glimpse into Mick Foley's mind, his history, his passions, and what some might call his pathology. No ghostwriter. Not "as told to." Straight from the twisted genius behind Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mankind--deciphered from 760 pages of maniacally handwritten notebook paper--comes a tale of blood, sweat, tears, and still more blood.

You'll chuckle at Mick's early backyard wrestling antics and homemade wrestling movies. You'll be amazed by the inside scoop on legends in the business like Terry Funk, Harley Race, Abdullah the Butcher, and Ric Flair. You'll squirm as Mick describes his incredible risks in the ring and his grisly, mind-numbing injuries. Finally, you will cheer with true admiration as arguably the hardest-working, most dedicated, and most heroic man in sports-entertainment beats all the odds and takes home the prize he had been told all along he would never, ever get: the World Wrestling Federation Championship belt.

Great book, but prinitng error in my copy
By MarioX720
Very entertaining book. After purchasing this 6 months ago I finally got around to reading it. I would find myself unable to put the book down for hours. My one gripe with the book, would be that my copy had a printing issue where half of chapter 26 and the entirty of chapter 27 & 28 where missing from my book and instead replaced with pages 371 through 402 that I had previously read in the book. Nonetheless, I loved the book and found it entertaining, but do wish that I would be able to read the book in its entirety the way it was meant to be read. How will I ever sleep at night not knowing what happen during Foley vs Sabu? Oh well, definitely recommend it anyways!

Good Audio Book, But Not as Good as the Real Thing
By Amazon Customer
The first thing I said after reading this book last fall in hardcover is that is that they've got to put out an audio version, and Mick Foley has to read it. After all, the book has a lot of humor in it by the way the story's told, and Foley himself is a pretty funny-sounding guy as well, so it should be a sure-fire hit, right? Well, it's here, and although they had to condense 500 pages into three-and-a-half hours, it's retained most of the humor and depth of the actual book.
I have to say that Foley's narration has its moments, but not that enough of them. Foley doesn't really hit his stride until about a half-hour in when he gets into his training from Dominic Denucci and gets a few impressions in. His impersonation of Vince McMahon is almost uncanny. He also does most of the swerve bits in the book (like the one where he claimed he hugged Eric Bischoff on his way out of WCW), and those are definitely funny. But, unfortunately, most of the narration is Foley just reading out of the book, which is cool since they're his own words, but isn't quite what I was expecting. I think some better direction could have helped here.
Most of the book is covered in this recording. The only things that are spare in their discussion are his parents, his courtship of Collette, his last days in WCW, and Owen Hart. In fact, Owen wasn't even mentioned at all in this version, which is strange because Foley dedicated about 10 pages to him in the book. I was also hoping for some of the extra chapters that will be in the paperback version to be released next month. Still, it was an easy purchase, it's fun to listen to if you're going on a long drive somewhere, and it might be something cool to play to anybody you know that pooh-poohs wrestling.

Humorous, insightful and full of thumbtacks
By Amazon Customer
Mankind: Have a Nice Day! gets behind the curtain to reveal the politics and planning behind running a wrestling show, as well as gets Mick Foley's thoughts behind his greatest career achievements. Mick Foley isn't a dumb musclehead like you might expect a pro wrestler to be. His plain-and-simple storytelling style allows his warm, yet mischievous, personality to shine through. He didn't use a ghostwriter because he wanted the creative license with the book whether it was a success or a failure. Combine that with a truly interesting and exciting life to talk about, and even people who don't know the difference between a wristlock and a wristwatch can appreciate this one man's life. The book begins with the grotesque story of his 1994 match in Germany with Vader for WCW where he lost half of his right ear. The best thing about this first chapter is that although the common reader would probably shy away from a story as violent as this one, Foley tells it in such a good-natured and funny way that it almost seems like it's just another day at the office. Mick Foley has met, in almost Forrest Gump-like fashion, many of the great past and present wrestlers in the business. Foley also eulogizes Owen Hart, who died in May while he was still in the process of writing, as well as his longtime friend Brian Hildebrand, who passed away recently of complications from cancer. Mankind: Have a Nice Day! is an entertaining read for fans and non-fans alike. Jim Ross put it best in the foreword, "I guess in some ways this is a love story. The story of one man's love of his life. A life worth living." If you want to judge a book by the cover, take a look at the back and see the injuries of Foley diagrammed in a clean, efficient way. If you want to judge the man by the book, I would say this is one hell of a book written by one hell of a man. ....

A rigorous, skeptical, deeply reported look at the new science behind the mind's surprising ability to heal the body

Have you ever felt a surge of adrenaline after narrowly avoiding an accident? Salivated at the sight (or thought) of a sour lemon? Felt turned on just from hearing your partner's voice? If so, then you've experienced how dramatically the workings of your mind can affect your body.

Yet while we accept that stress or anxiety can damage our health, the idea of "healing thoughts" was long ago hijacked by New Age gurus and spiritual healers. Recently, however, serious scientists from a range of fields have been uncovering evidence that our thoughts, emotions and beliefs can ease pain, heal wounds, fend off infection and heart disease and even slow the progression of AIDS and some cancers.

In Cure, award-winning science writer Jo Marchant travels the world to meet the physicians, patients and researchers on the cutting edge of this new world of medicine. We learn how meditation protects against depression and dementia, how social connections increase life expectancy and how patients who feel cared for recover from surgery faster. We meet Iraq war veterans who are using a virtual arctic world to treat their burns and children whose ADHD is kept under control with half the normal dose of medication. We watch as a transplant patient uses the smell of lavender to calm his hostile immune system and an Olympic runner shaves vital seconds off his time through mind-power alone.

Drawing on the very latest research, Marchant explores the vast potential of the mind's ability to heal, lays out its limitations and explains how we can make use of the findings in our own lives. With clarity and compassion, Cure points the way towards a system of medicine that treats us not simply as bodies but as human beings.

“Ms. Marchant writes well, which is never a guarantee in this genre… Second, [she] has chosen very moving characters to show us the importance of the research… and she has an equal flair for finding inspirational figures… the studies are irresistible, and they come in an almost infinite variety.”
—New York Times

“Cure is a cautious, scrupulous investigation of how the brain can help heal our bodies. It is also an important look at the flip side of this coin, which is how brains damaged by stress may make bodies succumb to physical illness or accelerated aging…Cure points a way toward a future in which the two camps [mainstream medicine and alternative therapies] might work together. After all, any medicine that makes a patient better, whether conventional, alternative, or placebo, is simply medicine.”
—Wall Street Journal

“A well-researched page-turner… raises questions about the role of culture, environment and neurochemistry in our responses to treatment—and may very well lead to widespread changes in the ways we practice medicine.”
—Susannah Cahalan, New York Post

“Cure is for anyone interested in a readable overview of recent findings in mind-body phenomena, a reliably enthralling topic… A rewarding read that seeks to separate the wishful and emotion-driven from the scientifically tested.”
—Washington Post

“Research-heavy but never dull, this revelatory work about the mind-body connection explains how the brain can affect physical healing.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“Marchant is a skeptical, evidence-based reporter—one with a background in microbiology, no less—which makes for a fascinating juxtaposition against some of the alternative treatments she discusses.”
—New York Magazine

"A thought-provoking exploration of how the mind can affect the body and can be harnessed to help treat physical illness."
—Economist

“In a wide-ranging and compelling new book, science journalist Jo Marchant explores whether the mind can heal the body… With lively, clear prose, Marchant surveys the evidence for the mind-body connection.”
—Science News

“Fascinating and thought-provoking. Marchant has travelled extensively around Europe and the US, talking to health workers and ordinary folk, to produce this meticulously researched book… Cure is a much-needed counter to a reductionist medical culture that ignores anything that doesn’t show up in a scan… [it] should be compulsory reading for all young doctors.”
—New Scientist

“A revved-up, research-packed explication of the use of mind in medicine, from meditation to guided visualisation. Marchant’s nimble reportage on the work of scientists in novel fields such as psychoneuroimmunology and her discussion of placebos are as fresh as her reminders of how stress and poverty affect wellbeing are timely."
—Nature

“Could my belief that I’m going to feel better in itself heal me? It’s a fascinating question, and one that British author Jo Marchant takes on with aplomb in her new book, Cure.”
—Spirituality & Health

“Writing with simplicity, clarity and style, and covering an enormous range of material, [Marchant] surveys with grace what we think we know, and what we would like to know, about the mysterious and troubling relationship between our minds and our bodies… [She] is level-headed, always with one foot planted in the worlds of science and reason. Though open-minded, she is rigorous, her gently skeptical tone reassures, and she gracefully skewers quackery.”
—The Guardian

“Thought-provoking… This new generation of evidence-based mind-body researchers has produced some remarkable findings, which Marchant analyses with elegance and lucidity."
—Times Literary Supplement

“Jo Marchant makes her case so cogently that it is hard to disagree [with her]… The author has a gift for writing that is both clear and vivid, and communicates complex ideas in a way that is comprehensible and uncondescending… This is surely an area of medicine whose time has come.”
—The Independent

"A diligent and useful work that makes the case for 'holistic' medicine while warning against the snake-oil salesmen who have annexed that word for profit."
—Sunday Times

“This is an important book, and one that will challenge those dismissive of efforts to investigate how our thoughts, emotions and beliefs might directly influence our physical wellbeing… The evolving science explored in Cure is intriguing and trailblazing, and Marchant's account of its pursuit is often gripping… There's a lot to this impressive book, and it has the potential to have the same dramatic impact on our understanding of our self as Norman Doidge's blockbuster, The Brain that Changes Itself.”
—Sydney Morning Herald

"Marchant explores the possibilities of psychology-based approaches to improving physical well-being in this open-minded, evidence-based account… A powerful and critically needed conceptual bridge for those who are frustrated with pseudoscientific explanations of alternative therapies but intrigued by the mind’s potential power to both cause and treat chronic, stress-related conditions."
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"A balanced, informative review of a controversial subject."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Cure represents a journey in the best sense of the word: a vivid, compassionate, generous exploration of the role of the human mind in both health and illness. Drawing on her training as a scientist and a science writer, Marchant meticulously investigates both promising and improbable theories of the mind’s ability to heal the body. The result is to illuminate a fascinating approach to medicine, full of human detail, integrity, and ultimately, hope.”

Chapter 2

Linda Buonanno hugs me as soon as we meet, and shows me upstairs to her small, first-floor apartment in a housing block just off the freeway in Methuen, Massachusetts. Her living space is tidy but densely packed with framed photos, scented candles and an overwhelming preference for the color green. She sits me at the table, in front of a perfectly laid out tea set and a plate of ten macaroons. The 67-year-old is plump with short, auburn hair and a girlish giggle. “Everyone thinks it’s dyed, but it isn’t,” she tells me. She hovers until I try a macaroon, then sits down opposite and tells me about her struggles with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

She talks fast. Her symptoms first struck two decades ago, when her marriage of 23 years broke down. Although she dreamed of being a hair- dresser, she was working shifts in a factory, running machinery that made surgical blades, juggling the 60-hour week with a court battle and caring for the two youngest of her four children. “I went through  hell,” she says. Within a year of the split, she started suffering from intestinal pains, cramps, diarrhea and bloating.

The condition has affected her ever since, especially at stressful times such as when she was laid off from the factory. Their jobs outsourced to Mexico, the group of women with whom she had worked and bonded was scattered. She retrained as a medical assistant, hoping to find work in a
chiropractor’s office, but once she qualified she found that no one was hiring. When she did finally find a part-time job, she had to give it up because of the pain from her IBS.

The condition has destroyed her social life too. When the symptoms are bad, “I can’t even leave the house,” she says. “I’d be keeling over in pain, running to the bathroom all the time.” Even buying groceries re- quires staying within reach of a bathroom, and she lists the local facilities: one in the Market Basket, one in the post office down the street. “This is 20 years I’ve been doing this,” she says. “It’s a horrible way to live.” Now she has to juggle the condition with looking after her elderly parents— her mother lives alone, while her father, who suffers from dementia, is in a nursing home. Linda’s brother was killed in Vietnam, and her twin sister died of cancer 18 years ago, so she is the only one left to help them.

She brightens. “But I travel,” she says. “I go to England, I do every- thing. I love it.” I’m thrown by this statement until I realize that she’s talking about Google maps. I ask her to show me, and we move over to her computer, which sits on a desk squeezed between the sofa and the micro- wave. She fires up the maps program and lands us on top of Buckingham Palace in London.

Suddenly I get a sense of how much time Linda has spent in this flat. She knows the layout of the palace intimately, zooming in to try to peek through the windows, then flying around the back to check out the private gardens. Other favorite destinations include the Caribbean island of Aruba, and the celebrity mansions of Rodeo Drive. Sometimes she looks up the addresses of her old workmates from the factory, friends who when they lost their jobs moved away to Kentucky or California, places that because of her IBS, and the demands of her parents, she can never visit for real.

Over the years, Linda has, like many patients with irritable bowel syn- drome, been passed from doctor to doctor. She has been tested for intol- erances and allergies, and has tried cutting out everything from gluten and fat to tomatoes. But she found no relief until she took part in a trial led by Ted Kaptchuk, a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston. It was a trial that would revolutionize the world of placebo research.

“You know I’m deviant?” Ted Kaptchuk looks straight at me and I get the sense that he is rather proud of this fact.1 “Yes,” I answer. It’s hard to read anything about the Harvard professor without coming across his unusual past. In fact it seeps from every corner of our surroundings—the house where he lives and works, on a leafy side street in Cambridge, Mas- sachusetts.

I’m asked to remove my shoes as I enter, and offered a cup of Earl Grey tea. Persian rugs cover the wooden floors, and proudly displayed in the hall is a huge brass tea urn. The décor is elegant, featuring period furniture, modern art and shelves filled with books—rows of hardbound doorstops embossed with gold Chinese lettering next to English volumes, from The Jewish Wardrobe to Honey Hunters of Nepal. Through the win- dow I glimpse the nuanced greens and pinks of a manicured ornamental garden that might be more at home in Japan.

Kaptchuk himself has gold rings, big brown eyes and a sweep of gray- ing hair topped by a black skullcap. He likes to quote from historical man- uscripts, and his answers to my questions are accompanied by long pauses and a furrowed brow. I ask him to tell me his own version of the path that brought him here and he says it started when he was a student and he traveled to Asia to study traditional Chinese medicine.

It’s a decision he attributes to “sixties craziness. I wanted to do some- thing anti-imperialist.” He was also interested in Eastern religions and phi- losophies, and the thinking of the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. “Now I think that was a really bad reason to study Chinese medicine. But I didn’t wanted to be co-opted, I didn’t want to be part of the system.”

After four years in Taiwan and China, he returned to the U.S. with a degree in Chinese medicine and opened a small acupuncture clinic in Cambridge. He saw patients with all sorts of conditions, mostly chronic complaints from pain to digestive, urinary and respiratory problems. Over the years, however, he became more and more uncomfortable with his role as a healer. He was good at what he did—perhaps too good. He would see dramatic cures, sometimes before patients had even received their treatment. “I would have patients who left my office totally differ- ent,” he says. “Because they sat and talked to me, and I wrote a prescrip- tion. I was petrified that I was psychic. I thought, Shit, this is crazy.”

Ultimately, Kaptchuk concluded that he didn’t have paranormal pow- ers. But equally, he believed that his patients’ striking recoveries didn’t have anything to do with the needles or the herbs he was prescribing. They were because of something else, and he was interested in finding out what that something was.

In 1998, Harvard Medical School, just down the street from Kaptchuk’s clinic, was looking for an expert in Chinese medicine. The U.S.  National Institutes  of Health (NIH)  was opening a center dedi- cated to funding scientific research into alternative and complementary medicine. Although tiny compared to existing NIH centers investigating cancer, for example, or genetics, it promised to be a useful new source of research dollars for Harvard. “But no one there knew a thing about Chinese medicine or any kind of alternative medicine,” says Kaptchuk. “So they hired me.”

Rather than study Chinese medicine directly, however, he decided to investigate the placebo effect, to find out whether this could explain why his patients did so well. Whereas Benedetti is interested in the molecules and mechanics of the placebo effect, Kaptchuk’s focus is on people. The questions he asks are psychological and philosophical. Why should the expectation of a cure affect us so profoundly? Can the placebo effect be split into different components? Is our response affected by factors such as the type of placebo we take, or the bedside manner of our doctor?

In one of his first trials, Kaptchuk compared the effectiveness of two different kinds of placebo—fake acupuncture and a fake pill—in 270 pa- tients with persistent arm pain.2  It’s a study that makes no sense from a conventional perspective. When comparing two inert treatments— nothing with nothing—you wouldn’t expect to see any difference. Yet Kaptchuk did see a difference. Placebo acupuncture was more effective for reducing the patients’ pain, whereas the placebo pill worked better for helping them to sleep.

This is the problem with placebo effects—in trials they are elusive and ephemeral, rarely disappearing completely but often altering their shape. They change depending on the type of placebo, and they vary in strength between people, conditions and cultures. For example, the percentage of people who responded to placebo in trials of a particular ulcer medication ranged from 59% in Denmark to just 7% in Brazil.3 The same placebo can have positive, zero or negative effects depending on what we’re told about it, and the effects can change over time. Such shifting results have helped to create an aura around the placebo effect as something slightly unscientific if not downright crazy.

But it isn’t crazy. What these results actually show, says Kaptchuk, is that scientists have long gotten their understanding of the placebo effect backwards. When he arrived at Harvard, he says, the experts there told him that the placebo effect “was the effect of an inert substance.” It’s a commonly used description but one that Kaptchuk describes as “com- plete nonsense.” By definition, he points out, an inert substance does not have any effect.

What does have an effect, of course, is our psychological response to those inert substances. Neither fake acupuncture nor a fake pill is in itself capable of doing anything. But patients interpret them in different ways, and that in turn creates different changes in their symptoms.

Current Science on the Importance of the Mind in Fighting Disease and Staying Well
By Spencer in Seattle
As someone with an autoimmune disease (multiple sclerosis), I read quite a bit in the areas of health and medicine, alternative medicine, and the history of medicine. This book, written by a British journalist who also has a PhD in microbiology, gives us a vibrant look at the powers of the mind in healing. She studies the current research and presents it in an accessible way. I'm not at all surprised that this book has rocketed to several top-seller lists.

Note that this book deals a lot with the powers of the placebo effect. The point here is not that doctors should be tricking everyone who is ill, just to make them feel good. Instead, the idea is that the placebo effect shows us certain things that can be harnessed to lead to wellness. For instance, being cared for really helps people heal, as does having belief and simply doing something to try to help with the problem. Our expectations are vitally important when it comes to healing, as are our previous experiences. Many factors determine how we respond to medical treatment and neglect. This book is about understanding those elements and bringing them into regular medical care instead of just relying on fake pills, as we can learn a lot from the placebo effect.

Here are the main things I see as take-aways in this book:
==========================================================

● Because of the importance of the mind/body connection, the placebo effect, and the studies cited by the author, it's extremely important to find a great healthcare provider you really trust. If you don't do this, your chances of doing well are simply undermined because you won't have belief in the person you're working with, and you might not even have belief in yourself. A good provider needs to be empathic and supportive, as their attitude is really beneficial to people going through treatment. The style and quality of your care provider matters a lot.

● For those of us with a serious disease, doing something about it is so much better and more important than doing nothing. This is because doing something -- if it's taking a drug or following a lifestyle "cure" -- harnesses the powers of the mind and body to work for you. Doing what you believe in really matters.

● For some things, the mind/body connection is really helpful: Things like pain, depression, fatigue, nausea, and generally "how we feel" are the most able to be influenced by mind/body interaction.

● Following from this, autoimmune responses are often influenced by the mind/body connection. Said another way, autoimmune diseases are particularly susceptible to mind/body interaction

● For other things, the mind/body connection is much less relevant. Things like infections need antibiotics and things like broken bones need casts.

● Stress is a real killer, as is emphasized in this book over and over. Stress is rooted in our flight-or-fight ancestry, switching on to save our lives. But switching this response on for a long time can result in things like high blood pressure and really damaging your body. With chronic stress, inflammation kicks in, which is not really what you want all the time (especially for those with MS). Stress can even rewire the brain (based on brain-scan research), and this has been documented.

For people with MS in particular and autoimmune diseases in general, there are a few particular take-aways in this book:
==========================================================

● Biofeedback and meditation can be particularly helpful, but you really need to "put in the hours" giving them time to rewire your brain and whole self. These practices don't heal us over night. You really need to take time to rewire your brain away from a stressed-out neural network.

● When people with MS have flare-ups, not getting too anxious about it is vitally important. This is for two reasons: 1) imagining improvement and thinking positively can actually bring it about, and 2) this point of view can help mitigate stress, thus keeping the exacerbation from getting worse

● With MS, inflammation is the real source of the problem (as our white blood cells are attacking the central nervous system), and stress has been shown to cause swelling. As a result, limiting stress is utterly vital for those of us with MS. Negative worries and anxieties can be equally destructive. Stress kills us in particular, because of the way MS works.

● Treating MS in ways you believe in really matters. Belief and healing go hand in hand. For me, this means that mainstream and alternative approaches can all "work" or be helpful, as long as you are invested in them and coming from a position of belief and positivity.

● Being cared for well is also essential, as the placebo effect is tapped into when you're feeling cared for.

Serious, Compelling and Mind-Changing Book
By Anne Mills
This book is a great introduction to mind/body phenomena in medicine, because it approaches the topic from a rigorously scientific, evidence-based standpoint. Ms. Marchant is a science and history journalist with a doctorate in microbiology, and without any touch of New Agey credulity. She looks at the ways in which the mind can affect the body's ability to cure itself, looking at individual case histories and at studies of many cases. Much of the evidence she cites is compelling; her arguments are strong enough to make me consider a non-traditional approach to my chronic hip pain, and for someone as science-based as I, that's quite a concession.
Beyond convincing arguments and evidence, Ms. Marchant has written an eminently readable and engrossing book. She makes one thing very clear: the antipathy of the current medical establishment to non-traditional medicine, even when it is shown to be helpful. This is based on the sad fact that it is at present very difficult to make money from an approach that leans to fewer pills, less intervention, and more human contact. Perhaps efforts at cost saving will bring this approach more into the limelight. In the meantime, this book is well worth reading, particularly for those with intractable medical issues.

Marchant gives us the facts about mind-body interaction... and much more
By Mister Charlie
I thoroughly enjoyed this wide-ranging inquiry into the myriad ways the "workings of the mind" can affect your body.

Jo Marchant,, a PhD in genetics and medical microbiology, and a seasoned author, began her investigation into these phenomena with a great deal of skepticism towards "alternative medicine", and through the course of the book helps the reader understand what pieces of the non-traditional pie are worth further investigation.

If you are skeptical about whack-a-doodle ideas related to your health, Marchant is the ideal author to open your eyes to the possibility that there are clinically-tested ways in which some seemingly whack-a-doodle ideas have proven their mettle. She is ideal because her writing is lively and engaging, and she maintains the open mind and clear eye of the scientist you wish more scientists would emulate.

Throughout the book, though, you can see the challenges presented by the massive medical Establishment and the pharmaceutical industry. Not only are doctors hesitant (or downright hostile) to adopt alternative mind-based practices into their regimen, but there is very little interest in funding research where, at the end of it, no drug can be marketed and profited from. And in this way, the book transforms itself from an "isn't it interesting what the mind can do?" book to more of a wake-up call for the entire medical industry.

Clearly in our society we are dangerously over-medicated. Marchant tells us "the top ten highest grossing drugs in the US help only between 1 in 25 and 1 in 4 of the people who take them." and "psychiatric drugs are responsible for more than half a million deaths in the western world each year." and "Medical errors in hospital are estimated to cause more than 400,000 deaths per year in the US alone". and "According to the US FDA, there are another 2 million serious cases of adverse drug reactions in the US each year, including 100,000 deaths". Even if only 1% of this was true, I wonder why people aren't absolutely outraged and demanding a change in how our medical industry functions.

Here's hoping Marchant's book falls into as many hands as possible, and helps to initiate that change.

ComMUSICation: From Pavlov's Dog to Sound Branding, by John Groves

Music can say so much. It can make us laugh or cry - it can make us remember our first kiss as though it was just yesterday. Just one chord in a film score is enough to tell us that someone is hiding behind the curtain. We can even hear how a person is feeling just by the sound of their voice. By understanding how such processes work, we are able to create sounds that trigger the desired associations in a branding context. John Groves, a music consultant and composer with a long track record of creating memorable melodies for brands such as Olympus, Mentos, Bacardi, Mars and Visa, documents the birth of a new discipline - Sound Branding. He shares personal experiences and anecdotes of how music can be responsible for suicide, revolutions, and making people pay more for a glass of wine. He explains how sound and music can be used strategically to provide identification, differentiation and generally to steer perception. ComMUSICation is a mix of cutting-edge scientific findings and one man's analytical - and sometimes humourous - views, ending in a walk-through of his structured system for developing and managing Brand Sound Identities. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in marketing, advertising, branding, music - in fact, for anyone who has ears!

Review
After reading just a few lines of a book, I will decide if I'm going to continue reading it or let it be. John's entertaining style of writing grabs you from page one and makes it easy not only for experts to immerse yourself into the psycholgy of music ... (Helmut Zerlett, composer and musician, bandleader, Harald Schmidt Show)

The book ComMUSICation successfully creates awareness for the power of sound in branding. John Groves takes the reader on an entertaining journey through sound and sound communication strategies. (Mathias Hevert, Managing Director Hevert-Arzneimittel)

ComMUSICation is a captivating book which endorses the significance and potential of music and sound in brand communications. By using convincing examples and case histories, Groves demonstrates how sound and music can be used to convey brand signals and anchor them deep in the minds of consumers. Furthermore he gives the reader an insight into his proven system for the development of Brand Sound Identities. A must-read for all marketing and brand managers. (Claus Fesel, Director of Corporate Communciations DATEV eG) --Testimonials to author

After a long and notable career at the forefront of sound branding, John Groves retains his evident passion for music's unique power to convey sophisticated information, born from a childhood delight in the sound of his favourite ice cream van. He builds on his professional expertise with pertinent research findings to put forward an authoritative case for brands to apply the utmost rigour in re-evaluating the way they use music and sound in their communications. Indeed, his text contains a convincing, all but definitive, methodology for developing and managing brand sound identities, one even the most hardened sceptic would struggle to dismiss. In so doing, Groves presents a much-needed, coherent antidote to the chronic blind-spot of the advertising industry: the subjective, knee-jerk decision-making about music that continues to plague and de-value its output whilst burdening hundreds of talented composers with a commissioning process so mercurial it reduces their average hourly income to little over minimum wage. Regrettably, the marketing, advertising and branding professionals most in need of these valuable insights are probably among those readers least willing to tolerate the author's use of dated references, his irrepressibly garrulous writing style and clumsy gender stereotyping that would not usually evade a good editor. When it comes to sound branding, however, Groves unquestionably knows his stuff and there is much here to absorb those with an interest in the subject. Sadly though, a promising opportunity has been missed to deliver what could have been a game-changing industry text. (Augusta Quiney) --The Works, British Academy for Songwriters, Composers and Authors

Having mentally taken the first step which was accepting the fact that our ears play just as big a role in brand building as our eyes do (as Nokia and T-Mobile are proving a million times every day), the case that John Groves makes for Sound Branding becomes a no-brainer. The book also makes it clear that we, the marketers, have to ask ourselves a potentially embarrassing question: how it is possible to have overlooked such a vital part of our responsibilities for such a long time? Groves nimbly invites the reader to convince himself of the significance of sound and music for marketing before he plausibly demonstrates what it takes to develop one s own Brand Sound Identity. Those of us who have ever tried to verbally describe taste or a colour will be pleasantly surprised how easily and playfully the author manages to plant sounds in the reader s head. ComMUSICation is not a Do-It-Yourself book. On the contrary, it shows the importance of working with an expert to develop a real holistic brand sound identity, as opposed to just the usual musical ending for the next cinema spot! What's more, it soon becomes clear that musicians are not automatically Sound Branding experts, just as artists aren t automatically good advertisers. Nevertheless ComMUSICation provides a number of good arguments that can be used when dealing with branding budgets or for when fighting with agency creatives about the last three seconds of the cinema commercial. All in all, John Groves book provides a good introduction to the subject of Sound Branding. However, before we can learn how to use sound properly, we must learn to listen firstly to ourselves and what we tell our clients. Whereas these days, most of us are quite fit in visual branding when it comes to the sound of a brand, we ve still got quite a way to go! (Heino Hilbig, CEO, Mayflower concepts / Former Head of Corporate Marketing, Olympus Europa Holding)

John Groves's new book ComMUSICation sets the benchmark in sound branding and has the potential of becoming the standard work. As I have had the pleasure of working together with John (on our sound branding project for EnBW,) reading the book was a good refresher for me. It not only covers all the basics of sound branding, but it provides everything one needs to know about the topic - just like a checklist. But most importantly - the book is not boring! You don´t find just pure theory but also interesting and funny anecdotes together with personal experiences and memories. This makes this highly informative book very easy to read, while being really amusing and entertaining. And last but not least: I personally can confirm, that John and his team are capable of transferring the written concepts into effective and inspiring sounds! (Oliver Schulz, Director of Marketing Communications, EnBW GmbH)

In today's tight budgets, music is often just an afterthought. John proves in his book that it makes good sense to put it a bit higher up on the list. (Konstantin Jacoby, founder Springer&Jacoby Advertising Agency) --Testimonials to author

I can recommend comMUSICation to everyone working in the media or music business. It examines the issue "Music and Sound for Brands and Media" from different angles and provides you with valuable insights about the effect music has on us - from a neurological, psychological and marketing point of view. comMUSICation is a specialist book but as it is written in an easy to understand, popular sciences style, it doesn't give you a hard time reading. I really enjoyed the anecdotes and Mr Groves' British humor.
