Jones writes a great story -- plot, characters, a fun ride. Then, at the end, she leaves us hanging -- not for the next story, but for the denouement of the current one. This doesn't make one want to hurry out to get the next book, as we know we'll only be left unsatisfied yet again. She's disappointed me twice with this 'buy my next book' trick; methinks I'll forego further frustration.

Again, a Hit for Mara Jacobs

I was so enraptured with book one that I actually bought this book. To me, it wasn't quite as good as book one, but it was still a good book. As JoJo destroys a promising college athlete's career by bribing him to shave points, she finds a conscience and goes to his and his family's aid. In saving them, she is saving herself. And her romance. However, like the first book, this one leaves the ending to be continued into the next book. That is my main complaint as to this author's strategy to sell her series. They are not actually stand alone books and I will not be buying another one just to have to buy the next, and the next, and the next... Authors who do this do themselves and their readers a great disservice. I like stand alone books, which these books are not,.It was well written and a good read, but I just got upset at the second non-ending.

Anna is back

Mara Jacobs keeps getting better and better. In Against the Spread, Anna Dawson is back along with Detective Jack Schiller and the boys (octogenarians who used to rule the Vegas gambling scene). Anna is a professional gambler (poker) and a compulsive gambler (sports). She's trying to reform the latter by making amends for something she's not proud of. But first, there's a dead body--a loan shark's enforcer who beat her up and broke her foot bones. Anna's a prime suspect.
Jacobs' knowledge of the gambling scene gives the book realism. Excellent characterization, a well-developed mystery and enough romance to make things interesting. Can't wait to see what comes next.
