Tony M. Vinci is currently working toward his Ph.D. in English and Cultural Studies at Southern Illinois University. He is co-editor of Culture, Identities, and Technology in the Star Wars Films: Essays on the Two Trilogies (2006) and has published essays in The Journal of Popular Culture and Science Fiction Film and Television. His current projects interrogate the relationship between trauma and posthuman ethics in post WWII literature and culture.
Donald E. Palumbo is a professor of English at East Carolina University. He lives in Greenville, North Carolina.
C.W. Sullivan III is Distinguished Professor of arts and sciences at East Carolina University and a full member of the Welsh Academy. He is the author of numerous books and the on-line journal Celtic Cultural Studies.

Fantastic for Teachers

I would recommend "Culture, Identities and Technology in the Star Wars Films" to fans of the series as well as to teachers. The book covers a wide range of topics within the Star Wars universe, from capitalism to race to feminism - there's even a chapter on the fetishization of objects. Most essays discuss all six films and though this could cause the chapters to veer in too many directions, the writing in each remains focused and clear.

The highlight of the collection is the essay "Feminism and the Force: Empowerment and Disillusionment in a Galaxy Far, Far Away," which compares the surprising feminine strength of Princess Leia with Padme Amidala's "weepy stereotype of a woman coming undone." The essay goes on to defend Padme and to draw parallels between her and modern victims of domestic abuse, but the real heart of the article is the section on Leia. Truly a great book of essays.

About the Author
Randy Connolly teaches Computer Science students at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada. He has been with the Computer Science and Information Systems department since 1997. He takes great pride in teaching tomorrow' s talented young developers. He specializes in teaching Web application development, games development, and object-oriented design. His extensive experience and expertise in ASP.NET comes from a combination of teaching and work in the professional sector. Connolly spent more than eight years developing Web sites for international clients and more than sixteen years doing corporate software development. He has been the recipient of the Canadian Social Science and Humanities Research Council Doctoral fellowship grant and the Petro-Canada Innovation in Research and Teaching Award (1998 and 2003).

Wide-ranging, easy-to-follow, practical

I was one of the tech reviewers for this book and I work as an instructional assistant with both authors at Mount Royal University, supporting the kinds of students this book was written for.

This book covers a *lot* of ground – too bad you can’t see a chapter listing for this text on Amazon. :(
I won't list out all 21 chapters, but will say topics like html/css, php, javascript, xml, security, cms, web services, web server admin, seo, and social network integration get a chapter (or more).

I found this book visually easy to follow, which is great if you’re a visual learner (like I am). There are lots (and lots!) of diagrams, the majority being very helpful in explaining concepts (instead of being just eye-candy-content-padding-filler). The layout is appealing, with enough white space and color highlighting to avoid the oh-look-a-wall-of-text effect.

As the book description blurb says here on Amazon, it "is appropriate for students who have taken a CS1 course sequence", so if you're totally new to programming, things are going to get confusing once the later chapters start tossing php and javascript code your way. (This isn't surprising, given this is meant to be a textbook for students past their first semester.)

I actually think it's a bit of a shame this is being plugged only as a textbook, as I honestly believe that anyone with some developing experience who is interested in getting into webdev would be well-served by this book - I personally learned many things reviewing the book. (The css sections on the box model and the cascade - two topics which I've seen many students struggle with over 10 years of helping them here at MRU - are particularly well done.)

Each chapter ends with the usual textbook content (a.k.a. exam fodder): terms and review questions. All chapters - except the first one on how the web works - also have projects of varying difficulty to practice the concepts covered in the chapter. I really liked these projects, as I found them very hands-on and sufficiently meaty, particularly ones past the first few introductory chapters. I can see students hitting a real-world problem after graduating, or during summer employment, and going back to these projects later for reference.

Excellent! A wealth of content covering technologies and skills needed for modern web development

As an instructor teaching web development at the university level, I am always on the lookout for textbooks that adequately cover modern web technologies. This one does and does it well. With all the new technologies that have appeared on the web scene in the last 3 years, academic publishers have had a difficult time keeping up with the fast pace of change. Fundamentals of Web Development is one of the few books that come with a full set of instructor resources, and that actually cover the material students need as a foundational knowledge base for today's web.

Be aware that this is not your grandfather's HTML! This book is comprehensive and covers some very advanced web development practices, from client-side HTML5/CSS & Javascript to advanced CSS layouts, frameworks and responsive design, to non-trivial server-side development using the LAMP/MAMP/WAMP stack, and more. Security, jQuery, AJAX, XML, JSON and RESTful Web Services, CMS and Wordpress, DNS and Webserver Administration, Search Engines and Social are all there. There is enough material and depth here to use this book as a single textbook for two or three core courses in a web concentration curriculum, which would be a huge savings for students. Chapters 1 through 7 cover client-side development and are ideal for an introductory course for technical students in IT, IS or CS.

Visually the book, PowerPoint slides and end of chapter projects are exceptional, especially the Art Store project that incorporates the HTML boilerplate framework for responsive design and comes with a full set of graphics and images. This is not simple stuff though and could be too complex for non-technical students, although the authors have done an excellent job making the material accessible with clear, plain English explanations of technical concepts and full color diagrams illustrating the more complex concepts.

I've reviewed dozens of textbooks for use in my IT classes, but when I received a desk copy from the publisher, I was stunned at the wealth of content included in this book. Fundamentals of Web Development is exactly what I've been looking for. It's a keeper - I've adopted this one.

Great book, not-so-great companion materials.

I was thrilled to find this textbook for my college class. It is hard to find a text with HTML-5, CSS, PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript. The book is well done, but I could not give it five stars because of the support material. While I normally teach this class without a text and provide all learning materials, I was hoping the companion materials would be top notch. There are FAR too many mistakes in the labs on the companion site. It causes confusion and extra work for me. I wish it had a nice test bank, but it doesn't. These are things that I look for in a text that costs my students $$$$$.

Otherwise, the book itself is the best I've used. I'll be able to cover the rest of the book in the next course, but I'll avoid the companion materials.

This book is super cute and my son enjoys it. It has nice illustrations and things you can point out (oh look, that painting is so big he has to use a helicopter, and that one is so tiny he has to wear his glasses to see it!) but the pictures aren't overwhelming. There are just enough words on each page to keep the pages turning and an infant interested. I gave this one 4 stars because "big" and "little" are used twice. I like this one a lot but feel the author's other book, Robot Kitties, is better. Robot Kitties uses more words (far, near, high, low, fast, slow, etc.). I say get both. A kid can't have too many books.

Don't Go See This Play On A First Date

This is not a horrible play, but it is a horrible play to see on a first date. I made that mistake. I saw it back in the 80s off broadway in New York. I scored great tickets, first row. The theater was small and the stage was not set in an arch or elevated.
One of the charactors/props in the play was a live orphaned baby lamb kept in a baby playpen at the front of the stage. The lamb kept licking our fingers during the play and was very cute. So far so good, this first date was going ok. I was scoring points with the girl I was with.
Then the drama started. The family portrayed is disfunctional and under incredible stress. The violence increases and increases. Yelling, fighting--I don't want to spoil things for you, but things don't turn out well for the lamb at the end (for you PETA folks out there--through the use creative F/Xs no living lamb was hurt in the production). End result for me--not a very good first date. It was a better read.

Disguised Gem

Sam Shepard has created a beautiful story of a poor family struggling to keep their home, relationships, and sanity. His amazing symbols keep the reader thinking, and this proves to be a play that is much more than surface deep. I especially enjoyed his themes on class and destiny, as well as his ideas on family and rebirth. For me, this book was amazingly written and intriquingly complex; its tragedies make the reader reevaluate his/ her own life. It made me laugh out loud, but in addition to being funny, it was enlightening, symbolic, provocative.

The blue collar Wild West, a la Sam

I had not read Shepard in many a moon, and it was good to check back into his strange version of America. This was written during his peak period (his recent stuff, most of which I have not read, is not as highly regarded), and like many of his other good ones, it concerns a squabbling family in the Southwest. The title and some of the dialogue indicates that Shepard viewed the travails of this clan as symptomatic of being part of the great white working class - and travails there are: alcoholism, violence, living with poverty breathing down their necks, smart alecky kids, a confused mother, a drunken, headstrong father. Parts of it are absurd and funny, but ultimately this is no comedy.

The play begins with the son Wesley, trying to repair the door his father, Weston, has smashed to bits in a drunken rage. The refrigerator is empty - there is a lot of action concerning the refrigerator and food. This is clearly a family in disarray. Both the parents are trying to sell the house out from under each other. The father is tough and dynamic, but seriously cracked, and much of the play concerns the other characters tiptoeing around and trying to figure out how to handle him. Most of the dialogue is standard American white trashese. There are a couple of monologs which, for me anyway, were not as effective. This was a good one. I would like to see it performed someday. It might be a little difficult though - the script calls for a live lamb.

About the Author
Jean Hollander is a poet, teacher, and director of the Writers' Conference at the College of New Jersey.

Robert Hollander, her husband, has been teaching Dante’s Divine Comedy to Princeton students for forty years, and is the author of a dozen books and more than seventy articles on Dante, Boccaccio, and other Italian authors. He has received many awards, including the gold medal of the city of Florence, in recognition of his work on Dante.

They are at work on their translation of Paradiso, the conclusion of the Divine Comedy.

Needs better protection

I bought this item as a gift for my brother, when I received it the cover and a few of the pages in the front had a tears. Luckily he was still happy but as a book collector myself I was disappointed at the quality in which it arrived- if it had been for me I would be returning it but he insists he's happy so I guess that's all that matters.

Best translation, to my knowledge.

My dad's friend, who teaches a class on Medieval literature at a local college, saw I was reading a different translation of the Divine Comedy, and recommended I get the Hollanders' version, claiming it was both the most accurate and the best to read. I'll have to take his word as far as being the most accurate, but I can say, of the three translations I've read, this one is by far the most enjoyable to read. They perfectly capture the mood, feel, and beauty of Dante, and I don't see any reason to ever read a different translation. Part of what makes the Hollanders' version superior are the wonderful explanatory notes and pre-chapter outlines, which guide you through the journey page by page, and make the journey that much more enjoyable. They notes, rather than being boring and confusing, are well written and enjoyable to read. Last but not least, the maps in the introductions to all of the books (maps of hell, purgatory, and paradise) really add to the feel of the journey Dante and Virgil take. I couldn't recommend this book more highly.

HOLLANDER IS ONLINE!

For those who ordered the Kindle and got Kirkpatrick instead of Hollander: go to the Princeton Dante Project online. The Hollanders are unbelievably generous in putting all of their Dante scholarship on a navigable website. Italian text, English translation, easily accessed line-by-line notes, Dante's pre-Commedia works... FREE!

I was several cantos into the Hollander Inferno years ago, when I realized that I was going to spend the rest of my life reading this work, and so it is proving to be. The English translation is beautiful. The explanatory notes are illuminating, providing an immersion into the world of Dante and classical literature.

I've read that on Homecoming Weekend, Princeton alumni march in a parade, class by class, beginning with the oldest graduating class... except for Prof. Hollander's Dante students, who insist on marching as a group, so illuminating did they find the experience. One can see why. I'm on my third journey with Virgil and the Hollanders, and I am everlastingly grateful to them.
