Denise Krebs (@mrsdkrebs) and Gallit Zvi (@gallit_z) are co-moderators of the Twitter chat group #geniushour. Denise works in Bahrain, teaching English to kindergarten students in a bilingual Arabic–English school. How to Make Genius Hour Happen

Young kids are naturally curious. They investigate bugs by digging up dirt and crouching down to get a closer look. Youngsters ask continuous questions seeking answers to something they wonder about. However, with time it seems students lose this need to search out answers. Authors Denise Krebs and Gallit Zvi encourage teachers to bring back the passion of inquiry with Genius Hour. The Genius Hour Guidebook offers a plan to “foster passion, wonder, and inquiry in the classroom”.

The Genius Hour movement has spread throughout classrooms. Search for #geniushour on Twitter and the results are endless. So, why is this not happening more in classrooms? Krebs and Zvi offer a plan for teachers who hesitate trying Genius Hour. The opening chapter explains what is Genius Hour and why students need it. “Genius Hour gives students time to find and follow their passion.” The authors point out that change can be scary, but good stuff can happen when we are a bit uncomfortable.

Introducing Genius Hour begins with a basic plan.
Step 1: Inspire Your Class - Inspirational videos and picture books are a great starting point. Set up the learning environment so that “students know they’re supported and encouraged to be creative”.
Step 2: Brainstorm with Students - Suggestions in the book include listing the things you love to do and learn, things you are good at, and things you wonder. Wonder Walls or Passion Walls can be displayed to inspire others.
Step 3: Create an Inquiry Question - Authors suggest taking time to teach students the difference between a Google-able question and a thick question. Tips are included for supporting those who can’t come up with a question.
The framework offered in the opening chapter is a guide, but the authors encourage readers to make it their own and personalize the experience.

Once the learning environment has been established, Genius Hour is ready to launch. Students follow four steps:
1. The Launch: Diving in and Letting Go
2. Loosening Deadlines and Sharing Passions
3. Helping Kids Make Their Learning Visible
4. Teaching about Self-Assessment and Feedback
Teachers are used to being in charge and letting go is difficult. However, the authors stress the importance of letting go and becoming a fellow learner. Guiding students through their research, especially finding good information, is the beginning of the process. Alan November is quoted in the book, “If we only teach one skill to prepare our students to survive in a web-based works, it should be that of critical thinking in the analysis of online information.”

Students are expected to share their newfound learning with the rest of the class in a presentation. Presentations can include slideshows, movies, documentaries, posters, or demonstrations. Students also need to take this experience further by making their learning visible. An authentic audience adds meaning to learning. Blogs and ePortfolios can be shared with the world through the various social networks. Several chapters explain in depth the process of making learning visible, self-assessment/feedback, and challenging students to improve the world.

The Genius Hour Guidebook may be an easy read, but it is a powerhouse of resources. The authors set a foundation to understand how learning happens during this time, how to guide students through the process, as well as assessment. Genius Hour Guidebook is Genius

Denise Krebs and Gallit Zvi present compelling reasons for implementing Genius Hour in our classrooms – and step-by-step ideas on how to do it. The authors note that “. . . student motivation is enhanced when autonomy, purpose and mastery are present in the classroom” (p. 4). Genius Hour provides all three.
The book is full of resources, planning tools and advice based on experience. There’s a companion website (that’s open to anyone) where you’ll find materials discussed in the book and articles that expand on the book’s core content.
This book provides compelling reasons to dedicate the time necessary for learners to have free rein – reasons we can share with naysayers – and clear steps to make the time successful.
It’s definitely worth the read for anyone wanting to change the way the education game is played.

An excellent approach for understanding consumers

The book deals with a relatively little publicised method for understanding consumer decision making, called means-end approach. The main idea is that consumers make decisions to solve problems or to obtain desired consequences, which are relevant because of their perceived relation with the goals or values that are salient in the decision context. This approach has some similitudes with the utility function in macroeconomics.
The approach has 5 steps: 4 framing issues which define the context of a defined decision and determining the reasons of relevance:
1. Identify the choice set of alternatives- the triad (Brand A, B, C)
2. Eliciting Choice Criteria (A preffered to B preffered to C)
3. Identifying Equities (basis for brand equity)
4. Identifying Disequities
5. Understanding Personal Relevance
6. Grounding in context (not linked to particular brands)
The book also introduces a personal interviewing procedure called laddering.
Considering the applications in defining marketing strategy for a brand, I hghly recommand this book to all marketing professionals who, like myself, will find this book illuminating

Nice addition to any magickal library

Nuctemeron Gates is S. Connolly's pathworking through the Nuctemeron of Apollonius of Tyanna. Connolly uses her method of gate opening detailed in The Infernal Colopatiron as the working system for this ritual. If one owns The Infernal Colopatiron this will definetly be a nice addition to work through. An adept should have little problem working through the Nuctemeron Gates without the addition of Infernal Colopatiron. I have not yet performed this pathworking as I'm still familiarizing myself with Connolly's system of magick (and do not consider myself an adept) but it will surely be one of my priorities when I do.

Excellent

I have enjoyed reading all of S. Connolly's books so far (haven't read them all but am working on it). Needless to say this one did not disappoint. I really enjoy that she writes in plain English (none of the fluff and nonsense crap in so many "occult" books) and in good detail. I've found this book to be a very useful resource to my practice.

What I like about these chap books is that it's gets straight to the point. You know, or should know what your doing prior to performing these rites. These scenarios basically, will come in handy for when I work with the 12 zodiac Gates, as this is just added energy work to make the ascension process stronger.

Great Book

The seller got the book to me in a week or less. The book was in great condition, brand new. I didn't know that it was a spiral bound book though. The book would have held up beter if it was a hard backed. But, it was my fault for not asking. The book was great and it was exactly what I was looking for.

"Strange News from Another Star" is a short fairy tale written by Hermann Hesse in April 1915, one year after the start of the 1st World War. In the fairy tale, two stars are juxtaposed.

On one star, life is valued, beauty is appreciated, reason is respected, humane traditions are cultivated, love and happiness are experienced and peace prevails.

On the other star, jealousy, hatred and despair are cultivated, wars are waged incessantly, battlefield murder is officially condoned, the countryside is left strewn with unattended cadavers and fear prevails.

The latter is clearly our world as Hesse saw it, rendered mythical, and the former is an idealized world that ours could be.

Unlike his earlier works, the story does not lend itself to rational interpretation. It is essentially a fairy tale dealing with the subconscious, magic and the dream world.

The fairy tale represents an intermediate stage between Hesse's initial ambiguous stance to the war, as an internationalist who tolerated war and a pacifist who looked forward to a German victory, and his later active anti-war campaign.

The story, which was titled “Merkwürdige Nachricht von einem anderen Stern” in German, was one of several that brought Hesse into conflict with supporters of the war, his country and its government.

Nobel Prize-winner Hermann Hesse was a German-Swiss poet, novelist and painter who is best-known for his seminal novels Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, and The Glass Bead Game. A child of missionaries, Hesse s writings are heavily influenced by Eastern mysticism, spirituality and the search for self-knowledge, themes that resonated with the hippie culture of the 1960s and which contributed to a resurgence in interest for Hesse s work following his death in 1962.

I read all the reviews and I was expecting all eight short stories and the book I received only contains an Introduction, one short story: "Strange News from Another Star", and an Autobiography. I went to return it and I am getting a full refund without having to return this 28 page book, so that's nice.

A good introductory book on wireless communications systems

A very good introductory book to the world of wireless network. It covers a number of popular cellular standards including IS-136, IS-95, GSM and the AMPS. However, not much material were devoted to the physical layer (i.e. modulation and coding).

From Uyless Black: Some ten years after writing technical books and receiving reviews on them, I've decided to respond to the input from readers. I should have done so sooner, but here it is now. You will now see this note placed on the comments for each book that is listed on this site, so don't bother re-reading. The note is the same for all the technical books.

The "pros" comments have dealt mainly with an easy to understand format. The "cons" comments have focused on the books (a) not being suited for college classes, (b) too many typos, and (c) mere recitations of ITU and Internet standards. There are other positive and negative comments, but these four points stand out.

The books were intended to be general references; general in relation to the topic itself. They were designed specifically to provide a relatively non-technical overview of ITU and Internet standards. They were used mostly by professionals who had degrees, and needed to (quickly) come to a general understanding of a set of standards. Afterwards, the readers could then go into the details of the standards themselves. Thus, my task was to distill many pages of highly detailed specifications into a few pages of summaries. One of the principal criticisms of the books was the very reason they were written.

I fault myself and my three publishers for not catching the typos, of which there are just too many. I was being asked by my publishers and my clients to hurry-up and get the next summary text out the door, as the clients' projects were beginning. That is why I wrote so many books in a short time. The technologies were coming out in rapid succession, and people did not have the time to read perhaps thousands of pages of standards. I did not take sufficient time to proof. But my publishers, sometimes with two to three proof readers---and at least one technical expert---reading a manuscript also dropped the ball.
I think my books provided a valuable service to my readers. My clients used them extensively, and I believe I was able to "short-cut" them to later read the details more efficiently. Nonetheless, in hindsight the books were insufficiently edited and written with too much haste.

I've been quite surprised that these books are still being sold. Not because they do not have merit, but that they are out-dated. The market for them does not come from the publishers, but from being on the used book market. My recommendation to you is not to buy technical books that are (sometimes) over ten years old.

One last point, which I hope you find humorous, perhaps ironic. Some readers compared some of my work unfavorably to an esteemed writer and lecturer. I read some his books. One contained a figure what was quite similar to a figure in one of my books; so similar in fact, that it included an error I had made in the figure. He did not source my figure, but led the reader to think it was his own creation----and his own error!

Excellent View Point On "The Early Childhood Educator's Data Collection Technique"

Middle school and high school teachers use tests and academic assignments. Elementary teachers use those tools while mixing in artistic products, worksheets, and other authentic techniques. For the early childhood teacher, however, all data collection and assessment on a child's development begins and ends with observation.

This book tackles how influential and enhancing to a teacher's techinque that observation can be if it is executed carefully and systematically. It begins with a brief basic look at what observation is, continues with a chapter on how observation is the key way to build relationships, and ends with how to apply it to your teaching by getting the teacher started immediately.

Inbetween those chapters, the teacher learns what her role is as an observer. I particularly like this chapter because parts of it hark back to Maria Montessori's perspective on "The teacher as a scientist." There are guidelines on how to be a skilled (not just okay) observer and advice on the barriers to becoming one.

In the end, I think this book covers all that you need for observation (e.g. kidwatching). It's inexpensive (my favorite kind of books) and is given a blessing (via the foreward) by Diane Dodge, the creator of the Creative Curriculum.

Pretty damn good read

The book came to me almost overnight (which was awesome because class was starting next week.. Yikes!) and once it arrived I love that it was small enough to fit in my purse and interesting enough I could read it while preschoolers were going apeshit in the background at work the next day!
